COPD is characterized by a
progressive, partially reversible limitation
of airflow. This airflow limitation is caused by two processes,
chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which occur together in most
patients. Chronic bronchitis is defined clinically as persistent
cough and sputum production. Emphysema is the progressive
of the gas-exchanging surfaces of the lungs, which usually
clinically as chronic dyspnea.
Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of COPD. Inhalation
of tobacco smoke from Cigar, Pipe and other such devices can
also cause COPD.
